Fields of Hope

by Ryan Keith

I'm walking down this path at night

Looking back and finding shadows

The fear is here, never leaving

The sun is gone, in this darkened sky.

Turn around, see those faces

Angry family, friends – there's no escape.

So much hate, a line so clearly drawn

A neighbor's smiles, on those you frown.

I still believe there's something out there

I don't know what, I cannot describe it.

Hidden behind this fog

A world lost, one we refuse to embrace.

A child's innocence we've all forfeited

So much is lost, but for what gain?

Day by day, we ignore the pleas

With bound pleasures, we endure the pain.

It's simple, but I am lost for words

Their doubtful eyes, their closed ears

For what good will change bring?

To those with closed hearts, what change can they grasp?

Seek the dream of a boy, a dream long forgotten

One last chance to end this chain

The future, too bleak to see

Bound by our luxuries, we refuse to recede.

What you thought you knew

Not more than a grain

You feel small today

So many truths, lost in this fragile Earth.

I'm holding on, I wait for you

In the field of empty stalks

A grain of hope, a silver moon

A future, a path yet to walk.
